How to achieve a subtle beach vibe during the colder months

For some, this time of year brings copious amounts of joy and gratefulness. From the family gatherings and holiday cheer to the days snowed in, cozied up next to the fire, some people can’t get enough of the chilly season. On the other hand, however, some homeowners are counting down the days until they can open up the windows, layout on the back patio and soak up the sunshine and warm temperatures.

While the above tasks may not be achievable during the winter months, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to kiss dreams of coastal splendor goodbye until spring comes around. In fact, there are plenty of simple ways to achieve a subtle beach vibe in your home while the snow falls outside. This time of year can be perfect for a change of scenery, according to personal decorator Sandy Kozar.

“During the winter we are inside so much, so it’s a good time to take a deeper look at your rooms and decide if you are ready for a change,” she said. “It could be a good time to experiment, especially once the holiday decorations come down and the space feels bare!”

Here are a few design and decor suggestions to help you create the beachy living room of your dreams when you need it the most:

Stick to white and ivory accents
Coastal blue is often sold as a must in beach design and decor, but it’s not necessary when you’re going for a more subtle vibe. Instead of painting your entire living room blue, take advantage of ivory accents that will brighten up your space.

White drowns out the gloom that often comes with winter.

Make lighting a priority
Ample lighting is a must when you’re trying to compensate for a time period when the sun sets later in the evening.

“Light is important year-round, but especially important when it gets dark so early, said Kozar. “Have cozy nooks with ample lighting and inviting throws.”

Take advantage of natural light during the day, then use dim fixtures and candles by night.

Hang artwork that takes you to the ocean
Many beachside, coastal homes have large bay windows that overlook the ocean or other seaside scenery. To exude the same look and feeling, invest in photos or large wall art that embrace the beach.

Create a relaxation station
When you think about a beach house, you likely want a living space that allows you to sit back and wind down while listening to the seagulls and crashing waves down by the sand. If you want to take things to the next level, create a relaxation station with a lounge chair and cozy throw pillows. Step it up a notch with a sound machine that takes you right to the beach.
