A bad night of sleep can ruin your day, making you less alert and more stressed out. As the weather warms up, you may notice the number of restless nights increasing. Not only can the rising temperature make you uncomfortable, but the early morning sunlight can also wake you up before your alarm goes off.
Refresh your bedding for a better night’s sleep with these tips:
Choose lighter bedding fabrics
If you’ve been tossing and turning at night since the change of season, you likely need to refresh your bedding with some lighter fabrics. Heavy materials can cause your body to overheat at night, leading to sweating, difficulty staying asleep and even dehydration.
As we move into the summer months, you’ll want to place your heavy bedding in storage and bring out lighter materials such as cotton, linen or a blended fabric. For example, 100 percent cotton percale sheets are highly breathable. Similar to Egyptian cotton, percale is a closely woven and combed fabric that provides a cool, comfortable sleeping surface.
Like percale, linen is very breathable and light. It makes a fantastic bedding material because it allows you to stay dry and comfortable throughout the night. Keep in mind, however, that linen fabrics are highly prone to wrinkling. A light comforter or blanket can easily hide wrinkly sheets, so you can enjoy the comfort of linen without sacrificing aesthetic appeal.
Another material to consider is a blend of cotton and bamboo. This combination of materials feels silky smooth, but leaves your body dry and comfortable, even on a sweltering summer night. Plus, cotton-bamboo blends are less prone to wrinkles and resistant to dust mites.
Ultimately, the type of fabric you choose is up to personal preference. Your interior decorator can help you decide which kind best suits your needs, both in functionality and style.
Consider a brighter color palette
Once you’ve decided on a material, it’s time to choose a summery color palette. Lighter hues of yellow, blue and green mimic the colors of nature so common this time of year. Work with your interior decorator to choose a color scheme that speaks to your personal taste.
You may choose a striped, floral or solid pattern, for example. These days, there is no shortage of options and combinations. Browse online a bit to choose some patterns that inspire you, eventually narrowing it down to find a unique pattern that brings energy and brightness to your bedroom. Remember, you’ll be spending a lot of time in your bedroom, so it should be a place of comfort and tranquility. Surrounding yourself with your favorite colors can make you feel more at ease.
Keep the look cohesive
The final thing you’ll want to consider is how your new bedding meshes with the rest of the room. Clashing colors and patterns can make you feel uncomfortable, so it’s best to go for a look that complements the aesthetic of the room as a whole.
If there’s one item to pay attention to in particular, it’s your curtains. Not only should they be opaque enough to keep out the 6:00 a.m. sunlight, but they should also complement your bedding. However, that doesn’t mean you have to put up striped curtains if you choose striped sheets. Your decorator can help you make a suitable choice, based on your preferences.
