How to revamp the mudroom

If you’re lucky enough to have a mudroom in your home, you have the luxury of utilizing some extra space to leave and enter your home, store shoes and outdoor wear and possibly even enjoy first-floor laundry. But just because this living space is often utilized as a place for picking up and dropping off items, that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun and decorate the interior. There are plenty of fun, simple ways to enhance the living space so it’s more comfortable and functional for you, your family members and guests.

Here are a few ways to revamp the mudroom:

Paint the walls
One of the easiest ways to give a room a new look is with a fresh coat of paint. Interior designer Kimberly Paulus highly recommends taking this step when redecorating the mudroom specifically.

“It’s so refreshing to see this space actually decorated,” Paulus explained about adding some color to the mudroom. “It doesn’t have to be extreme, but welcoming! After all, it is often the first room any family member visits upon entering.”

Coming up with a color theme can help you decide which hue makes the most sense for the walls. If you want to play it safe, choose a warm, neutral tone that’s cozy and inviting. Or, you can brighten things up as an homage to spring and warmer weather.

Create an organization station
For many, the mudroom is most likely the place everyone drops off their coats and shoes upon entering the home. This may also be the space to put toys, gardening tools and other accessories that generally make their way outdoors. Instead of letting all of the trinkets pile up, a new and improved organization system can work wonders in the mudroom.

“Think of the phrase ‘everything has its place,'” said Paulus. “If there is a home for everything, then it really comes down to putting it back where it belongs!”

From verticle exposed shelving to custom-built storage systems, there are so many different options to choose from. This is something a personal decorator can help you make a critical decision on.

“Each space is unique, so engaging an expert is always a good idea to maximize the use of the space,” Paulus said.

Personalize with accessories
Once you’ve made adjustments to the color and the storage options in the mudroom, it all comes down to accessories. How can you personalize this living space without going over the top? After all, the mudroom is typically one of the smaller rooms in the home, so the last thing you want to do is add clutter and make it less comfortable. Delicate accents like wall art, a runner and candles can make the perfect statement and help the room feel more comfortable and put together.
